Astrolabe wall piece

This wall piece is inspired by the astrolabe, an astronomical device used since classical antiquity. An astrolabe can calculate astronomical positions, identify stars or planets, and determine the time if the latitude is known, or vice versa. It can locate us in space and time. My wall piece is an homage to this amazing instrument and is not functional, though the hands and inner disk rotate.

It is made of brass which has been pierced and stamped, enamel on copper, vintage mother of pearl fan ribs, circuit board, wood, freshwater pearls, silver and 24K gold foil. It contains small enamel galaxies, which were made using a technique called camaieu, in which thin layers of white are painted on and fired over a transparent blue background, At the center of each galaxy is a small pearl.
